Welcome to Swanage Army Link.

The Swanage Army Link is a dynamic association that has evolved over nearly 30 years between the Swanage Railway, the British Army, the People of Swanage and the Royal British Legion.

Regular ongoing visits by the Royal Corps of Signals soldiers are core to this Link, as is Team Herston, formed in 2007, bringing together local residents and ex soldiers who work regularly on our core project – the upkeep of Herston Halt.

More recently we have been proud to welcome Heroes Haven into the fold.

Team Herston

Despite Frank Roberts’ retirement from the Army in September 2004 at the end of 22 years Colour Service, soldiers supporting Exercise Topham Hatt continued to visit Swanage. In fact the links between the town and 11th Signal Regiment continued to mature; the town appreciating continued support of serving soldiers, especially for Remembrance Parades, and the Regiment honouring its Corporate Membership of the Swanage Railway.

Frank had become the Infrastructure Manager at the Railway and had struggled to muster support for an Infrastructure Support Group, but by 2007 it was decided that the concept should be used to pull together serving, ex serving and civilians who would firstly support the Railway and then also visiting groups of soldiers.

Enter then Team Herston a dynamic group of individuals who meet at 08:30hrs on the second Saturday of most months - although we have been known to move our meetings if a beer festival or Remembrance Parade is in the offing!

There are now around 20 regular Team Herston attendees undertaking a wide variety of tasks, the most dynamic of which has been the total removal of the original 2 carriage wooden platform and its replacement with a 3 carriage length original Southern Railway concrete structure, all in place for Good Friday 2009.

If you would like to join our happy team, please contact Frank via the People pages.
