Welcome to Swanage Army Link.

The Swanage Army Link is a dynamic association that has evolved over nearly 30 years between the Swanage Railway, the British Army, the People of Swanage and the Royal British Legion.

Regular ongoing visits by the Royal Corps of Signals soldiers are core to this Link, as is Team Herston, formed in 2007, bringing together local residents and ex soldiers who work regularly on our core project – the upkeep of Herston Halt.

More recently we have been proud to welcome Heroes Haven into the fold.

Royal British Legion (Swanage)

There has been a link between soldiers visiting Swanage on Exercise Topham Hatt and the Royal British Legion since 1990, when a 10 day long visit by troops from Northern Ireland decided to have a quiet Sunday evening drinking orange juice and pop. What they did not know was that the evening was a major fundraising night for the Club, and it was packed! The various antics of the evening are recorded on film somewhere – including how a little pink dog raised well over £100 for the Poppy Appeal!

Over there years there have been dozens of fund raising initiatives, football matches with various youth teams and military parades. The main event of the year is of course the Remembrance Sunday Parade each November and others have marked D-Day and other anniversaries.

In 2011, 3 (Harrogate) Squadron was requested to support the 80th Anniversary of the Club in Swanage. It was felt important to mark this, as the number of old soldiers, and of course ladies, who were around at crucial times in the nations history is forever falling. A most enjoyable day was held in the company of Mr Richard Drax MP, and around 50 other fine people.

For the past few years soldiers have played a crucial part in the Poppy Appeal fundraising activities, with a sponsored run, bike and row over the equivalent distance of Swanage to Rudesheim (our twin town on the Rheine) on Remembrance Saturday. ALL ex forces personnel will be most welcome at the afternoon Remembrance Parade and church service on the following day. The form up is usually from 14:30 on the seafront.
