Welcome to Swanage Army Link.

The Swanage Army Link is a dynamic association that has evolved over nearly 30 years between the Swanage Railway, the British Army, the People of Swanage and the Royal British Legion.

Regular ongoing visits by the Royal Corps of Signals soldiers are core to this Link, as is Team Herston, formed in 2007, bringing together local residents and ex soldiers who work regularly on our core project – the upkeep of Herston Halt.

More recently we have been proud to welcome Heroes Haven into the fold.

British Army

In March 1983, a young Territorial Army soldier called Frank Roberts visited the Swanage Railways and started to install a telecommunication system along the one-mile long Railway.

The following year, with the prospect of operating public trains to Herston Halt, 30th Signal Regiment agreed to send 15 soldiers to assist on the Swanage Railway for 4 weeks. This was the start of 30 years of close association between the Royal Corps of Signals and the Swanage Railway Trust, a registered charity, of which 11th Signal Regiment is a Corporate Member.

Today 3 (Harrogate) Squadron is charged, on behalf of the Corps, with keeping the association alive. This is achieved by way of a number of charitable and more formal engagements. Exercise Topham Hatt features highly in the list of events, and sees soldiers working in support of the Railway gaining experience in teambuilding and practical skills. Each November the Squadron is usually able to support the town’s Poppy Appeal activities and Remembrance Sunday Parade. More of a challenge sees 100 soldiers running the grueling Swanage Half Marathon

Support from the Armed Forces is not exclusively provided by soldiers from The Royal Corps of Signals, and over the years all three services, and many cap badges, have worked in support of the Swanage Army Link.
